Intrigue: Israel, Greece sign status of forces agreement – Breaking News – Jerusalem Post

Israel and Greece signed a status of forces accord in Tel Aviv on Sunday that offers legal defense to both militaries while training in the other’s country.

Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos visited his Israeli counterpart Moshe Ya’alon at the Defense Ministry, where the accord was signed. Israel has only ever signed a similar accord with the United States.

During their meeting, Kammenos and Ya’alon discussed continued bilateral defense ties, and the latest regional situation.

“We very much appreciate your visit here during a difficult period for Greece. This underlines the importance of relations between the countries,” Ya’alon said. “We wish the Greek people and Greece itself success in its effort to overcome the economic challenge. We pray for that since we believe Greece is a very important country, with a history and a contribution to the history of humanity.”

Alexis Tsipras: Latest so-called ‘Leftist’ to sell-out to the bankers — RT Op-Edge

leave a comment »

For the so-called ‘radical leftist’ from Greece is only the latest in a long line of ‘radicals’ and ‘leftists’ to betray the people who had voted for them and cave into the demands of imperialist international finance capital.

The only surprising thing about Alexis Tsipras’ capitulation to the troika is that anyone should be surprised by it.

In Britain, we had our own version of the Greek ‘crisis’ in 1931. And like today, it was a politician nominally of the ‘left,’ the Labour Party leader Ramsay Macdonald, who eventually sided with the bankers against ordinary working people. A ‘banker-led coup’ occurred that replaced the democratically elected Labour government with a new capital-approved National Government, which moved to introduce steep cuts in public spending and slashed unemployment pay. The new government was dominated by the Conservatives, but had the turncoat ‘socialist’ MacDonald at the helm and another Labour traitor Philip Snowden as Lord Privy Seal.

The London bankers told MacDonald: “The cause of the trouble was not financial, but political, and lay in the complete want of confidence in His Majesty’s Government existing among foreigners,” records the historian A.J.P. Taylor, citing Keith Feiling’s biography of Neville Chamberlain. In the general election campaign in October 1931, Philip Snowden (soon to become ‘Viscount Snowden’), viciously turned on his former comrades in the Labour Party, saying that their anti-austerity program was “Bolshevism run mad.”

Austerity Measures Going Bad: Greek Banks Unable to Lend?

leave a comment »

Under an onslaught of 63.6 billion euros in non-performing loans and many people unable to meet payments after three years of austerity measures, Greek banks said they’ve been left virtual-ly unable to lend.

As default rates on mortgages approach 23 percent, the government said it would lift a ban on mortgage foreclosures for homes less than 200,000 euros that expires at the end of the year to help bank balance sheets, but that drew protests among lawmakers in the ruling parties of the country’s coalition government.

The non-performing loans have stifled the ability to restore desperately needed liquidity to a stagnant economy, bank officials said, and coincided with a drop in deposits from 237 billion euros at the end of 2009 to 162 billion in June.

Counting loans and credit cards, the overall rate of bad loans in Greece rose from 5 percent in 2008 to nearly 28 percent in March. Banking officials expect June figures to approach 30 percent.

Greek banks have been rocked by a series of blows, losing some 37.7 billion euros when a previ-ous government in 2011 imposed 74 percent losses on investors to write down the country’s debt by $134 billion.

Greece Remains Embattled On the Poverty Front

With a Eurozone record of 27 percent of Greeks unemployed, people are taking a pro-active approach to the crisis. Activists from the ‘We Won’t Pay’ movement, which boasts 10,000 members, are illegally reconnecting power to hundreds of homes.

Tough austerity measures have left many people in Greece unable  to pay their electricity bills. The ‘We Don’t Pay’ movement which  has over 10,000 members helps many of those by illegally  reconnecting power to their homes, despite legal action against  them.

The movement has been gaining new support, despite being targeted  by over a hundred law suits. The government warns refusal to pay  fees and taxes will only starve Greece of money it needs to get  out of debt.

Members of the ‘We Don’t Pay’ movement demand alternatives to the  austerity measures that, as many argue, have deepened the  recession and made unemployment unbearable.
