Apple’s Tim Cook harshly Criticizes Facebook, Google, Government Over Personal Privacy – Fortune

leave a comment »

Apple boss Tim Cook lashed out at Internet giants and government Tuesday, calling them out for undermining constitutionally-guaranteed rights to privacy.

In a speech seemingly aimed at differentiating Apple’s corporate culture from some of its biggest rivals in Silicon Valley, Cook stepped up his criticisms of those who fund their business models by monetizing users’ data.

“We at Apple reject the idea that our customers should have to make tradeoffs between privacy and security,” Cook said. “We can, and we must provide both in equal measure. We believe that people have a fundamental right to privacy. The American people demand it, the constitution demands it, morality demands it.”

Later in the article, Cook made this great, insightful comment:

“Removing encryption tools from our products altogether, as some in Washington would like us to do, would only hurt law-abiding citizens who rely on us to protect their data,” Cook said. “The bad guys will still encrypt; it’s easy to do and readily available.”

Read that again if need be. If the bad guys can easily encrypt their communications, and the government knows this, then why do they still insist that average American citizens not have their data encrypted? Wake up Americans! To paraphrase Kanye West when he accused Bush of not caring about black people, the U.S. Government does not care about Americans.

Hacker ‘made plane climb’ after taking control through in-flight entertainment system – Telegraph

leave a comment »

A prominent hacker has told the FBI that he managed to make an airliner “climb” and move “sideways” after infiltrating its in-flight entertainment system. The claim was made by Chris Roberts, the founder of the cybersecurity firm One World Labs, who was escorted from a United Airlines flight last month after sending in-air tweets bragging that he could deploy the oxygen masks.

The allegation that Mr Roberts said he had affected the actual performance the plane was made in an FBI affidavit applying for a warrant to search his computer, iPad and other electronic items that were confiscated by investigators after the tweeting incident.

The affidavit said that Mr Roberts claimed to have hacked the in-flight entertainment system and he overwrote the code on the plane’s Thrust Management Computer while on board a flight.

Texas Attack Gives U.S. Gov’t Perfect Excuse to Increase Spying on Own Citizens

leave a comment »

The FBI has ordered more U.S. terror suspects be put under 24/7 surveillance in the wake of the Garland, Texas shooting and a renewed emphasis by ISIS and other terror groups for potential American recruits to launch attacks at home, according to three FBI officials.

The officials told ABC News that agents have been ordered to review the cases of so-called “marginal” or “borderline” suspects, terms that had been applied to one of the gunmen in the Texas attack, Elton Simpson of Phoenix. FBI agents were familiar with Simpson and the views he espoused, but he was not put under 24/7 surveillance. He was viewed as being “more talk than action,” one agent said.

“We do not want to risk another marginal, homegrown extremist who was viewed as dangerous going active,” said one of the FBI officials. All three FBI officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly.

As If Russia Weren’t Enough, the U.S. Goes After China for Computer Hacking

U.S. Charges Chinese Army Individuals With Hacking in Unprecedented Move

The Justice Department announced charges against individuals in the Chinese military, accusing them of hacking U.S. companies for trade secrets, the first time the U.S. government has publicly accused employees of a foreign power with cybercrimes against U.S. firms.

The move to charge five individuals who allegedly worked for the People’s Liberation Army to hack into U.S. company systems marks a major escalation of the fight with China over such intrusions. U.S. government officials have long complained that China aggressively targets U.S. companies for trade secrets that would give Chinese companies a competitive advantage—a charge China has denied, saying such accusations have no basis in fact.

Attorney General Eric Holder and senior Federal Bureau of Investigation officials announced the charges Monday morning.

The charges have been filed against five people who allegedly worked for a part of the People’s Liberation Army known as Unit 61398 in Shanghai, these people said. The hackers allegedly stole some of the design information for a nuclear power plant, as well as cost and pricing information from a solar panel firm, these people said.

An indictment unsealed Monday charges five individuals, named Wang Dong, Sun Kailiang, Wen Xinyu, Huang Zhenyu and Gu Chunhui, with conspiracy to commit computer fraud and abuse.

China says U.S. hacking accusations lack technical proof

Wed Feb 20, 2013

(Reuters) – Accusations by a U.S. computer security company that a secretive Chinese military unit is likely behind a series of hacking attacks are scientifically flawed and hence unreliable, China’s Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.

The statement came after the White House said overnight that the Obama administration has repeatedly taken up its concerns about cyber-theft at the highest levels of the Chinese government, including with Chinese military officials.

The security company, Mandiant, identified the People’s Liberation Army’s Shanghai-based Unit 61398 as the most likely driving force behind the hacking. Mandiant said it believed the unit had carried out “sustained” attacks on a wide range of industries.

The Chinese Defence Ministry, which has already denied the charges, went further in a new statement, slamming Mandiant for relying on spurious data.

“The report, in only relying on linking IP address to reach a conclusion the hacking attacks originated from China, lacks technical proof,” the ministry said in a statement on its website (

“Everyone knows that the use of usurped IP addresses to carry out hacking attacks happens on an almost daily basis,” it added.

“Second, there is still no internationally clear, unified definition of what consists of a ‘hacking attack’. There is no legal evidence behind the report subjectively inducing that the everyday gathering of online (information) is online spying.”

As hacking is a cross-border, anonymous and deceptive phenomenon, by its very nature it is hard to work out exactly where hacks originated, the statement said.

NSA spied on Chinese govt and telecom giant Huawei – Snowden docs

The US National Security Agency (NSA) has spied on Chinese leaders and businesses, new Snowden docs indicate. Yet it seems that China’s telecom giant, Huawei, was the core target for the NSA campaign in China.

The new portion of revelations from the former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, published by Der Spiegel and The New York Times, has exposed the great interest of the US secret service in obtaining data from China.

It has been revealed that America’s NSA has multiple targets in the world’s second largest economy, among them the Chinese Trade Ministry, national banks, leading telecommunications companies and the country’s top officials, like former Chinese President Hu Jintao.

But even against that background, one Chinese company received the special attention of the NSA: it is Huawei Technologies, the world’s second largest network equipment supplier, which employs 150,000 specialists around the world and can boast an impressive $38.6 in annual revenues.

The company produces a large number of electronic products, among which are cutting edge network equipment, such as WLAN routers and fiber optic hardware. For the America’s NSA, which is craving total domination in global cyberspace, full control over these technologies is decisive.

Back in 2012 Congress called on US firms to avoid doing business with the Chinese telecom giant snapping at the heels of America’s Cisco Systems Inc., the world’s #1 telecom equipment producer, due to a national security threat the company posed, according to them. Another Chinese telecom giant, the ZTE Corp, was also named as a threat to US security.

Uproar in China and other Asian nations over ‘US spies through embassies’ report

Published time: October 31, 2013 14:32
Edited time: November 01, 2013 03:43

China and a number of South Asian governments have demanded an explanation from Washington over allegations that US embassies – as well as embassies of US allies – were used for NSA surveillance.

The diplomatic row has been caused by the Sydney Morning Herald’s report, which said the NSA collected its data in Asian countries by having its equipment installed inside US embassies and also in the diplomatic missions of the other ‘Five Eye’ nations, which includes Australia, Britain and Canada.

Beijing said it was “extremely concerned” by the news and was seeking clarification from the US.

“We also demand that foreign embassies in China and their staff respect the Vienna Convention … and other international treaties and not get involved in any activities which do not accord with their status or post and harm China’s security and interests,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Hua Chunying, said on Thursday.

The news of the data collection facilities operating out of the embassies in Jakarta, Bangkok, Hanoi, Bejing, and Dili was based on the documents leaked by NSA whistleblower, Edward Snowden.

The news that the US agency carried out espionage through foreign embassies has also provoked outrage in Indonesia, with the country’s Foreign Minister, Marty Natalegawa, saying the issue had been raised with the US chargé d’affaires in Jakarta.

The Horrible Truth About Thyroid Cancers, Nukes, Carcinogens and 9/11

Huffington Post: Nuclear Power Causes Cancer: What Industry Doesn’t Want You To Know

Nuclear power, frequently mentioned as one option for meeting future energy needs, would pose a health threat to Americans if a meltdown occurred. But despite meltdowns at Chernobyl and Three Mile Island, and many other near-miss accidents, there is another dirty little secret the nuclear industry doesn’t want you to know. Cancer risk from nuclear plants aren’t just potential risks, they are actual risks.

Every day, reactors must routinely release a portion of radioactive chemicals into local air and water — the same chemicals found in atomic bomb tests. They enter human bodies through breathing and the food chain. Federal law obligates nuclear companies to measure these emissions and the amounts that end up in air, water, and food, and to report them to federal regulators.

However, nuclear advocates consistently claim that these releases are below federally-permitted limits, and thus are harmless. But this thinking is a leap that ignores hard evidence from scientific studies. Now, after half a century of a large-scale experiment with nuclear power, the verdict is in: nuclear reactors cause cancer.

The claim that low doses of radiation are harmless has always been just a claim. It led to practices like routine diagnostic X-rays to the pelvis of pregnant women, until the work of the University of Oxford’s Dr. Alice Stewart found that these X-rays doubled the chance that the fetus would die of cancer as a child. Many studies later, independent experts agreed that no dose is safe. A 2005 report by a blue-ribbon panel of the National Academy of Sciences reviewed hundreds of scientific articles, and concluded that there is no risk-free dose of radiation.

Joseph Mangano, MPH, MBA, Executive Director of the Radiation and Public Health Project, has authored 23 scientific articles since the mid-1990s documenting high local cancer rates near nukes. One study showed child cancer exceeded the national rate near 14 of 14 plants in the eastern U.S. Another showed that when U.S. nuclear plants closed, local infant deaths and child cancer cases plunged immediately after shutdown.

Other publications by Mangano have shown rising levels of radioactive Strontium-90, emitted by reactors, in baby teeth of children living near reactors, which were closely linked with trends in childhood cancer rates.

The young aren’t the only ones affected by reactor emissions. New evidence has examined adult rates of thyroid cancer, a disease especially sensitive to radiation. Thyroid is the fastest-rising cancer in the U.S., nearly tripling since 1980. This evidence proves that most U.S. counties with the highest thyroid cancer rates are within a 90-mile radius covering eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and southern New York. This area has 16 nuclear reactors (13 still in operation) at 7 plants, the densest concentration of reactors in the U.S.

A November 2007 article on U.S. child leukemia deaths updated the 1990 National Cancer Institute study and showed local rates rose as nuclear plants aged — except near plants that shut down.

A nationwide study of current cancer rates near nukes is sorely needed. In May this year, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) quietly announced it was commissioning an update of the 1990 National Cancer study. This sounds like a positive step. However, the NRC has long been a harsh critic of any suggestion that reactors cause cancer. This is not surprising, since the Commission receives 90% of its funds from nuclear companies that operate reactors.

911 Truth: 9/11 first responders outraged over exclusion of cancer from Zadroga health act

Scores of first responders believe they contracted cancer due to the time they
spent at the toxic World Trade Center site and are outraged the disease is being
excluded from the new James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.

“Every time we bury a New York City firefighter: Cancer. Cancer. Cancer,”
said retired Firefighter Kenneth Specht, who is battling thyroid cancer.

“How can that not be included? It’s absolutely unacceptable.”

Specht, 43, retired in 2008 after 13 years with the FDNY, too sick to keep
working. He spent two months at Ground Zero after the terror attacks, desperately
searching for the remains of his fallen colleagues and unaware that he was breathing
in apparently dangerous chemicals.

“How can they not say, ‘You were in a bad position and we’re going to
try and rectify this?’” said Specht who, because of the cancer and gastroesophageal
reflux disease, is a prisoner in his Nassau County home.

“It’s not about money – we’re looking for some decency,” he said.

Margaret Stroehlein was driving from her Long Island home to Manhattan’s Memorial
Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to visit her ill husband when she heard about
the Zadroga bill decision.

“I wanted to cry,” said Stroehlein, whose firefighter husband Jeff
has been stricken with a rare form of brain cancer.

RT News: Donna Summer died from 9/11 cancer?

The music world was shocked on Thursday by the loss of disco legend Donna Summer to lung cancer. The singer largely avoided publicizing her battle with the illness, but said in 2008 that she thought the disease developed because of the 9/11 attacks.

Summer, who passed away this week at age of 63, told the Daily Telegraph four years before her death that she believed the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks played a role in her illness. The singer was residing in an apartment near Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan during the time of the tragedy.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph in 2008, Summer said that had a premonition that the attacks would occur roughly a month before; afterwards, she says, she went into a deep depression and couldn’t leave her nearby apartment.

“I didn’t want to talk to anybody. I had to keep the blinds down and stay in my bedroom,” she told the paper.

Adding on the story to Access Hollywood, that same year Summer told the television program about her progress after the attacks.

“I actually went to therapy. I got help. I was extremely affected by it but I feel a lot better now and I processed it as much as a person can,” she said.

Only now, however, are people close to the legendary singer saying that the 9/11 attacks affected her to a much greater degree.

Sources close to the singer speaking on condition of anonymity tell the website TMZ that Summer largely blamed inhaling toxic particles after the 9/11 attack on her cancer. One source tells TMZ that she would spray disinfectant in the air constantly after the attacks. Denery Terrio, the host of Dance Fever, adds to the site that he saw Summer regularly hanging silk sheets in her dressing room after 9/11 to keep dust out.

“She somehow felt that her illness was a byproduct of the attack,” adds another source to TMZ.

The singer isn’t alone. Hundreds of law enforcement officers and first responders that came to the aid of victims at the World Trade Center say they developed diseases after the attack.

“Every time we bury a New York City firefighter: Cancer. Cancer. Cancer,” firefighter Kenneth Specht told the Daily News last year.

Just shy of last year’s 10-year anniversary of the attacks, Dr. David Prezant of the New York City Fire Department published a study that confirms that exposure to chemicals in the air after the attacks signaled an increase in cancer diagnoses.

Cancer-causing toxins including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls and dioxins have all been identified as agents apparent at Ground Zero. In his findings, Dr. Prezant explicitly wrote that “This study clearly shows World Trade Center exposure in these firefighters led to an increase in cancer.” He analyzed data from nearly 10,000 male firefighters before coming to his conclusion.

That study was published in the September 3 edition of The Lancet, a medical journal out of the UK.

Patrick Lynch, president of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, added to 1010 WINS Radio last year that cancer deaths were growing in first responders at an “astronomical” rate.

In the decade after 9/11, 297 cops that were on the scene were diagnosed with cancer. At least 50 of them have passed.

35 Reasons for Many Small Fission Nukes at the WTC

 1) heat generation at ground zero for six months (china syndrome)
2) inability to quench ground zero heat with water
3) red hot/molten steel at ground zero
4) missing core columns from ground zero (vaporized during destruction)
5) spreading of sand at ground zero consistent with attempts to limit radiation
6) washing of steel recovered from pile consistent with radiation decontamination
7) extreme security for ground zero steel shipments consistent with limiting access to radioactive steel
8) extreme security at ground zero, limiting exposure, view of devastation
9) extreme pulverization of WTC concrete into very fine particles
10) disappearance of over one thousand human bodies from WTC debris
11) disappearance of furniture, phones, filing cabinets and computers from WTC debris
12) disappearance of elevator doors, office doors, office cubicle walls, toilets and sinks from WTC debris
13) several floor fragments fused together in “meteorite” object
14) bone fragments sprayed into Bankers Trust upper floor during destruction
15) multiple blast waves during destruction of tower
16) large fireballs during initiation of WTC1 destruction
17) small backpack-sized fission nukes exist
18) fission-nuke technology well-established
19) low efficiency of fission nukes ensures leftover radioactive fragments and China syndrome
20) EMP formation during tower destruction (exploding cars, partial burning)
21) Description of heat in WTC blast cloud
22) Extensive cover-up of ground zero air by EPA
23) High rate of cancers, including thyroid cancer typically associated with radiation exposure, in ground zero responders
24) Melted, hanging skin in WTC survivor Felipe David in absence of fire

ABC News: 9/11 First Responders Plagued by Health Problems From Toxic Dust and Debris

In the months following 9/11, firefighter Kenny Specht, 43, spent every day at the site, navigating the rubble in hopes of at first rescuing people, and later recovering the bodies of those crushed when the towers fell. Though he and his fellow rescue workers were picking through rubble littered with asbestos, mercury, crushed florescent light bulbs and other known toxins, they were outfitted with only their normal uniform to protect them from potential contaminants.

“They gave us paper masks and overalls, like you’d see in home improvement shows. They let us go back to our homes every day with our contaminated gear,” Specht says.

It wasn’t until 2006 that he started to experience health problems. At first it was gastrointestinal issues that required him to have his gallbladder removed, but in 2007 a CAT scan following an injury on the job revealed thyroid cancer.

“The injury to my neck was fortunate, because I didn’t have any symptoms of cancer yet, so I wouldn’t have known,” he says. Specht had his thyroid removed and went through radiation and now has to take medications for the rest of his life to replace the function of his thyroid.

“The optimist in me wants to believe this is my only bout with cancer, but the realist in me knows it’s hard to ever say you’re cancer-free after you’ve had cancer,” he says.

Though the string of cancer cases among New York firefighters who worked at 9/11 seemed like a sad coincidence when Specht was diagnosed, this Levittown, N.Y., man is now part of a trend that researchers are just beginning to understand: Those who worked at the WTC site seem to be at increased risk of cancer, especially thyroid cancer, melanoma and lymphoma. According to a study released of nearly 10,000 New York firefighters (half of whom worked at the WTC site), those from the site are 32 percent more likely to have cancer.

“I’ve been to 54 funerals of firefighters since 9/11 and 52 of them are cancer-related,” says John Feal, a former firefighter and founder of the FealGood Foundation, an advocacy group seeking medical coverage and compensation for first responders of 9/11.

Israel Nearly Ready to Deploy Star Wars Laser Weapons in the Middle East

leave a comment »

Now we see why the FBI archived Nikola Tesla’s great discoveries and notes in the 1940s, including his impressive laser technology.

SINGAPORE – An Israeli state-owned arms company developing a laser-based missile shield that evokes “Star Wars” style technology says its deployment over the country is closer to becoming a reality.

Rafael Advanced Defense Systems said development of the system was advanced enough for the company to be comfortable with publicizing it at this week’s Singapore Airshow, which is Asia’s largest aerospace and defense exhibition.

The laser technology behind the missile shield called Iron Beam is not that far removed from fiction.

“It’s exactly like what you see in Star Wars,” said company spokesman Amit Zimmer. “You see the lasers go up so quickly like a flash and the target is finished.”

Iron Beam is designed to intercept close-range drones, rockets and mortars which might not remain in the air long enough for Israel’s current Iron Dome missile defense system to intercept.

Iron Dome batteries have shot down hundreds of rockets launched by Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip at Israeli cities. With no peace deal in sight and also threatened by Hezbollah in Lebanon, Israel wants to beef up that system and develop further protection.

Avnish Patel, an expert in military sciences at the Royal United Services Institute, said Iron Beam is potentially an effective addition to Israel’s defenses rather than a drastic change.

“Essentially, its military and tactical utility will be particularly useful in complementing the already proven Iron Dome system in tackling very short range threats such as rockets and mortar fire and in close quarter engagements,” he said.

Rafael Advanced Defense Systems said test data show Iron Beam lasers are blasting away more than 90 percent of their targets. The new system can also be modified so that multiple lasers can be used to hit a target, according to the company. But officials remain tight lipped as to when and how the Iron Beam will be deployed.

Aaron Swartz’s Life Spurs Protest Against Internet Surveillance

leave a comment »

Since Aaron Swartz’s death a lot of activists realize they’re facing huge battles, but everybody can be doing something to fight back in a way to address that, Parker Higgins from the Electronic Frontier Foundation told RT.

RT: ‘The Day We Fight Back’ protest  scheduled for Tuesday coincides with the anniversary of internet  activist Aaron Swartz’s death. How has privacy legislation  progressed following his suicide, allegedly prompted by severe  charges for unlawfully downloading academic journals online?

Parker Higgins: Obviously, a year ago we knew  much less about the NSA, GCHQ and other Intelligence Agencies. In  the last six to seven months we’ve learned things from Edward  Snowden’s leaks that of course were issues that Aaron was himself  very interested in. The privacy legislation has advanced a lot  because of that and so we’ve seen things that are directly  related to Aaron with move forward on cyber-crime law in the US,  for example, but then there are a lot of things that he couldn’t  really foresee a year ago.

RT: Swartz’s suicide has made him a martyr  in the eyes of many internet freedom activists. Do you feel  authorities effectively drove him to take his own life, with an  impending potential 35 years in prison and $1 million in  fines?

PH: I think suicide is very complex and there is  no way to point at any single issue. Even if you don’t go as far  as they’re saying: that the authorities drove him to this, it was  an unjust and unnecessary display of power and a way to hound  somebody, and they actually hounded him to death – we can’t know.  But I do know that when you talk to the people that were close to  him, that seems to be something that they think.

RT: How has what Aaron Swartz achieved and  stood for motivated others to continue his cause?

PH: Aaron gave a great speech a couple of years  ago now, just after we had won the SOPA battle, tactically. So  the reason we won this was that people were inspired to become  heroes of their own story, it really takes activism to their own  hands. I think that this message has really resonated not just  since his death, but especially in a year since his death, I  think we’ve seen a lot of activists realize that we’re facing  very large battles, but everybody can be doing something,  everybody can be fighting back in a way to address that.
