Ukraine’s Future: U.S. Rejects Int’l Court Jurisdiction Regarding Argentina’s Debt
Washington has refused to allow the UN International Court of Justice (IJC) to hear Argentina’s claims that US court decisions on the country’s debt have violated Argentina’s sovereignty.
“We do not view the ICJ as an appropriate venue for addressing Argentina’s debt issues, and we continue to urge Argentina to engage with its creditors to resolve remaining issues with bondholders,” the US State Department told Reuters in an email.
The State Department sent an email with the same content to one of Argentina’s leading newspapers, the Clarin.
Argentina complained against Washington’s decisions on its debt to the International Court of Justice in The Hague on Thursday.
But according to existing norms, Buenos Aires needs Washington to voluntarily accept the ICJ’s jurisdiction for the proceedings to begin.
The US withdrew from compulsory jurisdiction back in 1986 after the UN court ruled that America’s covert war against Nicaragua was in violation of international law.

Previously, Argentina announced the restructuring of 93 percent of its 2001 debt, but creditors holding the other seven percent of the bonds demanded full payment and initiated a legal battle.
A New York court ruled that Argentina had to pay $1.33 billion to the hedge funds, blocking the transfer of $590 million that Buenos Aires forwarded in order to cover its restructured debt.
The judge said Argentina had to start talks with the lenders that didn’t approve the debt restructuring and negotiate to postpone the payment with those who did agree.
With lenders unable to receive payment, international regulators and rating agencies announced Argentina’s ‘selective’ default.

Argentina Sues U.S. in World Court to Stop Vulture Fund Billionaire
In breaking news, Argentina has sued the United States in the World Court, alleging a U.S. court violated Argentina’s sovereignty for ruling it must pay so-called bondholders who refuse to sign on to the country’s debt restructuring after its 2001 economic collapse. Argentina defaulted on its debt last week. The U.S. must first agree to follow the court’s ruling or the case will not proceed. But our next guest says today Obama could instantly and easily solve this problem by a simple gesture.
We’re now joined by Greg Palast. Greg is an investigative reporter for the BBC and The Guardian. He’s the author of the New York Times bestsellers Billionaires & Ballot Bandits, The Best Democracy Money Can Buy, Armed Madhouse, and Vultures’ Picnic.

NOOR: So, Greg, help us sort through this crazy situation, where you have Argentina wanting to pay off its debt holders that agreed to the debt restructuring, but a New York judge has blocked this from happening, and now Argentina is going to the World Court, saying it’s not going to get pushed around by the U.S. courts and by one particular bondholder by the name of Singer. Tell us a little bit about who he is and how we got into this mess.
PALAST: Okay. For the BBC and Guardian I’ve been hunting this guy, Paul Singer, known as “the Vulture”, all over the planet, up the Congo River, Peru, Argentina, and Detroit, okay?
This guy is called “the Vulture” for a good reason. I didn’t give him the nickname. He’s called that by everyone in the banking community. What he does is he buys–he finds old debts that were considered long settled by nations that were in a civil war, like the Congo or Argentina, or the U.S. auto industry, okay? And what he does is he then–after a deal has been worked out, he waits about ten years, and then he suddenly shows up and says, hey, wait, you owe me! Well, how much? Oh, say, 10,000 percent more than I paid.
In the case of Argentina, he bought a bunch of bonds, about $30 million worth. Argentina, listening to the bad advice from the IMF years ago, went bankrupt 15 years ago. Since then they’ve done well. They had a workout on the agreement. Actually, almost all their bondholders are being paid very nicely. They pay every month. In fact, Argentina just dropped a half a billion dollars into a New York bank and said, pay off the people we owe. But “the Vulture” has swooped down, Paul “the Vulture” singer, and said, remember those $30 million in bonds that I have? Well, I want you to pay me $3 billion. I want to repeat that. He’s got $30 million. He wants $3 billion, 100 times what he paid.

Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed today said the Europeans and the Americans had created a monster in Israel but did not bother about the atrocities it had committed and was committing.
They would continue to support Israel even if the Israelis committed genocide and killed all the Arabs.
This, he said, was their way to atone for all their treatment of the Jews in the past.
According to Dr Mahathir, the Jews should really be venting their spite on the Germans and other Europeans. But they were too smart. Killing Arabs was easier and more fun.
Writing in his blogsite chedet.cc today, Dr Mahathir said the Jews claimed they were the “chosen” people of God despite having been persecuted by the European Christians who accused them of the crucifixion of Christ; forced to live in ghettos in Europe and having to endure periodical massacres (pogroms) by Europeans.
”The Jews are Semitic people. So are the Arabs. But today the Jews behave as if they are the only Semitic people.
“They accused everyone of being anti-Semitic if they criticised the Jews or accused them of wrong doings.
“For whatever they do, however criminal it may be they would accuse their detractors as being anti-Semitic,” he said.
Dr Mahathir said that in this free world, anyone could accuse anyone of anything and it would be tolerated because it was part of freedom of speech.
But the Jews may not be criticised in any way without the critic being labelled “anti-Semitic”.
And many European countries support this view to the extent of jailing anyone accused of being anti-Semitic.
“Clearly the Jews think of themselves as special beings who are privileged to the point of being above condemnation or even criticism.
“Their present behaviour confirms this arrogance. They do what they wish even when the world considers their deeds as criminal, inhuman even.
“Currently they are engaged in killing hundreds of the people in Gaza and razing their cities to the ground. Hospitals, schools and private dwellings have been bombed and rocketed, he said.

Israel Dominates the Debate in Malaysia – Again
Recent comments by Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim have demonstrated yet again how issues related to Israel continue to divide this majority-Muslim country – and could influence the country’s next national election.
In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Mr. Anwar responded to the question of whether he would open diplomatic ties with Israel by stating his “support” for “efforts to protect the security of the state of Israel,” while at the same time backing the “legitimate rights of the Palestinians.” He stopped short of saying he would establish diplomatic relations between the two states – what he describes as a “tricky” issue – and stated that any change to the status quo would remain contingent on Israel recognizing the aspirations of the Palestinians.
Malaysia is one of three Southeast Asian nations including Indonesia and Brunei that does not have diplomatic relations with Israel, though limited economic ties exist between private companies in both countries.
“Some refuse to recognize the state of Israel,” he said, “but I think our policy should be clear – protect the security [of Israel] but you must be as firm in protecting the legitimate interests of the Palestinians.”
The comments triggered a storm of debate and criticism, with members of the ruling United Malays National Organization (UMNO) and other groups accusing the leader of abandoning the Palestinian cause – an emotive cause long-supported in the majority-Muslim Southeast Asian nation.

China Poised to Replace Money Sources With New Mobile Platform
China is developing its first national single mobile payment platform. It’s been created to lift domestic information consumption and boost economic growth, and could replace cash, credit and debit cards.
The system has been undergoing trials since the end of last year, China Daily reports.
Very few countries possess an operating national payment platform, Colin Light, China Digital Consulting Leader for PricewaterhouseCoopers in Hong Kong told China Daily. China’s mobile platform based on Near Field Communication technology (NFC) has a bright future and potentially could abolish cash and plastic cards.
The platform enables communication between financial institutions that provide mobile payments, and mobile network operators, People’s Bank of China Deputy Governor Li Dongrong revealed in an interview on Monday.
Li said 21st century mobile finance is undergoing a standardization process to integrate mobile payment providers into a single system. The NFC-platform “provides a solid infrastructure foundation to help China boost domestic information consumption and make the sector a new driver for economic growth.”
Mobile payment arms of China’s leading financial organizations, including China Construction Bank Corp, China CITIC Bank Corp Ltd, China Everbright Bank Co Ltd, China UnionPay have been connected to the country’s largest telecom operator China Mobile.
“The biggest obstacle for banks and mobile operators to operate in a unified way is to build scale. You need a scale advantage to reach wide acceptance of payments,” said Light.
