Harvard-Trained Author Says America’s 50 Percent Divorce Rate Is a Myth

According to Shaunti Feldhahn, author of “The Good News About Marriage,” one of the reasons that Christians may be losing their faith in God and the institution of marriage is because they have been told that the divorce rates among churchgoers is the same as everyone else.

However, after eight years of research, the Harvard-trained author believes that the supposed divorce rate of 50 percent among Americans, including Christians, is a figure that has been invented or exaggerated. She adds that one of the reasons for this fictitious figure could be to diminish the faith of church members, their pastors, and anyone who believes in the sanctity of the marriage vows.

Feldhahn went on to say that claims that church members are getting divorced at the same rate as the general population can destroy a pastor’s faith in his work, not to mention his congregation’s belief that obeying Scripture will help save their marriage. She adds, “For the average person in the congregation, there’s this subtle feeling like, ‘If that’s true: if on something as important as marriage, doing what the Bible says doesn’t change anything, what does that mean about the Bible?’”

According to the Atlanta, Georgia-based researcher and author, the actual divorce rate around the U.S. for the general population is more likely about 31 percent and the divorce rate among those who regularly attend church is much lower, around 15 to 20 percent.
