JERUSALEM, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) — Israel is ready to respond to a nuclear Iran, both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres stressed on Thursday.

The two leaders spoke at a memorial ceremony of the Yom Kuppur War fought between Israel and the Arab coalition 40 years ago.

The war is considered by Israelis as a national tragedy as the Jewish state found itself attacked unprepared. But it is more deemed as a retaliation by the Arab states led by Egypt and Syria for a defeat in the 1967 Six-Day War.

Hailing the power of the current Israeli military, Netanyahu said, “In any case, the Israeli Defense Forces should be prepared for any scenario at any time in any place.”

Amid recent talks between Iran and representatives of the international community to try to strike a deal on Iran’s nuclear program, Netanyahu has been campaigning on several fronts to prevent world leaders from easing the sanctions imposed on Iran to prevent it from developing nuclear weapons. Tehran insists its nuclear program is only for peaceful purposes.

“If the pressure persists — Iran would dissolve its military nuclear capability. If the pressure loosens, Iran would continue its efforts to achieve nuclear weapons,” he said.
