If the Americans intercepted cell phones in Germany, they broke German law on German soil,” Germany’s Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich told the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag on Sunday, adding, “The confidence in our ally, (the) USA, is shaken.”

Friedrich also stated, “Those responsible must be held accountable” and demanded “complete information on all accusations.”

The German weekly Der Spiegel said in a report published on Saturday that the magazine had seen secret documents from the NSA which show that Merkel’s mobile phone had been listed by the agency’s Special Collection Service (SCS) since 2002.

The report adds that the German chancellor’s mobile number was still on a surveillance list in June 2013.

On Friday, the German government said its intelligence chiefs would visit Washington soon to probe the spying controversy.

Angela Merkel spying row: Barack Obama ‘told about phone tapping three years ago’ 28 Oct 2013 00:15

A German newspaper claims the US president was told about the monitoring of Merkel’s phone in 2010 and permitted it to continue

President Barack Obama was first told that German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s phone was being tapped by US intelligence officers three years ago, it is claimed.

German newspaper Bild am Sonntag has reported that the president permitted the covert monitoring to continue – an accusation denied by the National Security Agency.

The news will add pressure to a diplomatic row between the US, Germany and other European nations whose leaders’ phones were allegedly tapped by the NSA.
