Christian Retail Giant Hobby Lobby Accused of Anti-Semitism?
“Hobby Lobby apologizes for any possible employee comments that may have offended anyone, especially our Jewish customers and friends. Comments like these do not reflect the feelings of the Green family or Hobby Lobby. We are investigating this matter and do not tolerate discrimination at our company or our stores,” the company posted on its Facebook fan page.
“Hobby Lobby is currently working with our buyers over our merchandise selection,” the post continued. “Our customers have brought this to our attention, and we are currently evaluating our holiday items and what we will carry in the future.”
The Hobby Lobby apology was the latest — but likely not the last — chapter in the dispute that erupted after a customer at a New Jersey branch of the store last week, asking about the curious absence of Jewish Hanukkah decorations for sale, was allegedly told that “we don’t cater to you people.”
Here’s what one commenter on ReligionNews.com had to say:
Here’s a possibility. Somebody is lying. Does anyone honestly think that a clerk in any store who had received any sort of customer relationship training would refer to a customer as a “you people”? Let alone in reference to a person’s religious faith in an area where many of those faith lived? Furthermore what kind of company spokesperson would give such a chum answer as the person who allegedly stated the Chanakuh items were not carried because of Green’s Christian values. The answer makes no sense at all. First because it just hands ammunition to someone who is determined to show that HL is anti Jewish, and second because we are not exactly discussing “Satan Rocks!” t shirts.
I don’t trust those with an agenda and the person who reported this sure has an agenda. Hobby Lobby is a big target right now because of their stance on the birth control mandate. Think of what Eden Foods is going through. HL is also a target because the owner makes it clear that he will operate his store according to his Christian values. As far as I know there have never been accusations of anti Semitism levied against Green or Hobby Lobby before. Don’t you think this would have come up before with company being under such scrutiny.
So pardon me but my “it doesn’t fit” alarm is going off big time. I have to conclude that somebody is lying. I don’t think it is HL.
Analysis: Questions remain with this story, the first of which is: Why should one alleged store employee be made the representative of nearly 20,000 employees? Were there any other witnesses who heard the exact quote from the employee? So far this is hearsay, yet hearsay, if repeated often enough and reinforced with the accusation of anti-Semitism, becomes fact in public opinion. Hobby Lobby has been around for many years, and yet all of a sudden, it is being targeted for the label of anti-Semitism. And also, Obama is taking Hobby Lobby to the Supreme Court over it’s healthcare coverage, with the official reason being it wants to force Hobby Lobby to pay for birth control pills and abortions (and most likely same sex partner coverage).
